On Christmas morning, most of us will wake up to the sounds of laughter, family, and the rustle of wrapping paper.
But for some, Christmas will be spent in a hospital bed at Mercy University Hospital, far from home and loved ones.
No one would choose to spend Christmas Day in hospital - but thanks to the compassion of the Mercy staff like Nurse Alphonsa Benny, patients will still feel the warmth and spirit of the season.
“We make sure no patient feels alone on Christmas Day.”
Alphonsa has spent the last two Christmases working at The Mercy and this year will be her third. While she misses her family back home, she has found another family inside the hospital walls.
“This is my third Christmas working at
the Mercy. Of course, I miss my family back home,
but here in the hospital, we become each other’s
family. We make sure no patient feels alone on
Christmas Day.
When I see the joy we can bring to our patients,
even something as simple as hanging a few
decorations or singing a carol, it makes me feel part
of something very special.”
You Can Help Keep That Spirit Alive
When you give to The Mercy Christmas Appeal, you support Alphonsa and her colleagues as they bring comfort, care, and kindness to patients who can’t be home for Christmas.
Your donation helps make sure every ward is filled with warmth - from shared meals and festive touches to quiet moments of reassurance for someone who feels frightened or alone.
“When we are healthy,” said Alphonsa, “it can be
difficult to imagine the challenges a patient may
be facing, especially during the holiday season.
Yet life can change in an instant, and every patient
deserves care, comfort, and hope this Christmas.”
Be Part of Something Very Special.
Your kindness makes Christmas at The Mercy possible. With your support the nurses, doctors and healthcare assistants can continue to go above and beyond - holding hands, sharing smiles, and reminding patients they’re never alone.
